An End of Year Message to Families from Chancellor Banks: June 22, 2022
Posted June 23, 2022An excerpt from Chancellor Banks' June 22nd letter to families
"...You know the needs of your children and the strengths and weaknesses of your schools better than anyone. [...] No more imposing big changes without first seeking meaningful feedback from our families.
For those reasons, we are streamlining our school system and opening up clearer channels of communication with our leaders. That includes empowering our local district superintendents and school principals so that families can more directly and easily communicate with those in charge."

face coverings Now optional for students (3K-5th)
Posted June 13, 2022June 10, 2022
Dear Families:
Yesterday, Mayor Adams announced that, starting Monday, June 13, face coverings will be optional for students in early childhood schools or programs.
To maintain the safety of our staff and students, we will continue to practice strict COVID-19 protocols, including increased ventilation, a daily health screening, and test kit distribution.
Mask-wearing will become optional indoors, outside, and on school buses. Anyone who chooses to wear a mask may continue to do so, and your child may request a mask from their school or program if they need one. Masks are strongly recommended for any staff member or student who knows they have been exposed to COVID-19 within the previous 10 days. Mask wearing is still required in medical rooms and nurses’ offices.
Nurses will have masks on hand for anyone entering who may need one.
Sincerely,
The New York City Department of Education

UFT Teacher Center Saturday Academy: April 30

Parents & Caregivers
There's still time to register for academic enrichment on April 30.
The education experts at the UFT Teacher Center invite you and your young scholars to participate in our annual Saturday Academy!
There will be six interactive, online courses, each tailored to a particular grade level, designed to supplement your child's school work in a fun, creative way.
Session topics by grade level:
3K to Pre-K — Growing and Changing in Our Environment
Children are naturally curious! They try to make sense of the world around them. Children will have an opportunity to notice dramatic changes that occur in science and nature. We will also explore the growth and transformation in our natural environment. Imagine the ways we can learn, play and discover the beautiful changes all around us!
Kindergarten to 1st grade — I love NY: The Five-Borough Tour
New York City is such an exciting place to live! We will take a virtual field trip as we “visit” the five boroughs of this great city! In this session, we will visit historic and memorable places in each borough! Join us for art, music and movement activities as we tour New York City and celebrate diversity across our communities.
Grades 2 to 3 — The Hero Inside Ourselves
Not all heroes wear capes! They are everyday people who do exceptional things that impact everyone around them. In this session, children will learn about the characteristics of heroes, the different types of heroes, and identify their own unique qualities and strengths to unlock their inner hero. Students will be empowered knowing they are heroes too!
Grades 4 to 5 — City of Heroes
Are heroes BORN or are they MADE? We often see heroic acts that are bigger than life on screen, but many times we miss the heroism that surrounds us in everyday life. Children will explore how heroism manifests in our communities and resides in all of us. Students will learn that they can make positive changes to their community through everyday actions big and small.
Grades 6 to 8 — Say it Loud! The Power of Poetry
Do you want to have fun expressing yourself? The grades 6-8 Saturday Academy will explore the power of poetry and spoken word using colorful language. We will write original poetry and share with our peers. Join us if you want to explore your poetic side.
High school grades — What Matters Now: Students share concerns about contemporary issues
This session is about you and issues you care about. High school students will be invited to use different forms of journaling and create short speeches to share their concerns. You'll join others who share your interest on a virtual field trip and conversation.

SPring is in the air!
Posted April 12, 2022As we gear up for Spring Break, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our families who came out on Saturday to support the Green Team in the effort to get our Harlem Renaissance Garden ready for the Spring. If you were unable to come out, not to worry, as there will be plenty of other opportunities to lend a helping hand.
To keep our school communities safe after spring recess, we strongly encourage all students to get tested for COVID-19 before returning to school on April 25, regardless of vaccination status. Your child will come home with four COVID-19 home tests; two for your child and two for a family member. Please see this letter from The DOE for further details.
Finally, I want to take this time to share with you that Monika, our Parent Coordinator, suffered from a fall last week. Some of our students either witnessed the fall or heard about it. Please know that Monika is home recovering. She is hoping to return by Thursday, April 14th.
I look forward to seeing you all back on Monday, April 25, 2022, relaxed and ready for an exciting few more months of this school year. As always, if you have any questions and or concerns, I am only a phone call or an email away. Have a safe a beautiful Spring Break with your loved ones.
Warmly,
Andrea Woodhouse-Spence

FACE & CEC 3 Check In Notes 3/8/2022
Posted March 9, 2022K-12 Student and Staff Optional Face Coverings – Effective 3/7
Effective March 7, face coverings will become optional, indoors and outdoors, on NYC public school grounds and on school buses, for all K-12 students and staff with a few exceptions. Please share this letter with families, and translations are available on the Messages for Families.
A face covering is now optional for visitors. All visitors wishing to enter DOE school buildings must continue to show proof of having at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, show identification, and complete the daily health screening form.
Anyone who chooses to wear a mask may continue to do so; face coverings will continue to be available through the school’s custodian engineer.
Face coverings are still required in the following scenarios:
Face coverings after return from 5-day isolation: Anyone returning on Day 6 after a positive COVID-19 diagnosis or after having COVID-19 symptoms without testing is still required to wear a well-fitting mask at all times on school property through Day 10.
Face coverings for Early Childhood programs: The indoor mask mandate is still active for LYFE, EarlyLearn (Infants & Toddlers), 3-K, Pre-K, and 4410 classrooms. Children two years old and older, and all staff in these classrooms, must continue to follow the same face covering requirements whether they are in a district school, CBO, or home-based program.
Face coverings in medical rooms/nurses’ offices: Wearing a face covering is still required in medical rooms/nurses’ offices, as well as in School Based Health Centers. Nurses will have masks on hand for anyone entering who needs one.
It is strongly recommended that face coverings be worn when an individual has been exposed or potentially exposed to COVID-19 (in the same room for 15 minutes or longer with a person who tested positive for COVID-19). This face covering should be well-fitting and should be worn for 10 days after the known exposure.
Town Halls for Families on COVID-19 Vaccinations – 3/14 and 3/16
The DOE, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), is hosting two town halls for families of children ages 5–11, regarding the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine. Families should register in advance for one of the town hall sessions, which will both cover the same content and be held via Zoom; translations will be provided via the call-in numbers shown in each registration link:
March 14, from 6:00–7:30 p.m.; registration opens on March 9 for the March 14 town hall session, which will be held in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic.
March 16, from 6:00–7:30 p.m.; registration opens on March 9 for the March 16 town hall session, which will be held in English, Spanish, Cantonese, and Bangla.
CCECs Can Continue to Meet Virtually Through 3/16
Please see Governor Hochul’s Executive Order No 11.3.
Pre-K Applications Are Open – Closes 3/18
All children who are NYC residents and born in 2018 can apply now to enter NYC DOE’s Pre-K programs in fall 2022. Children do not need to be toilet trained to attend Pre-K. Dear The Locke School of Arts and Engineering at 20 WEST 112 STREET Community:
I am writing to notify you that a member or members of our school community have tested positive for COVID-19 and may have exposed others while at school.
Below you will find guidance on next steps that will help keep our school community healthy and safe. The information below reflects the expertise of the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), Test & Trace Corp (T2), and the New York City Department of Education (DOE).
What Happens Now?
Your child may come home with a COVID test kit today. The kit contains two tests.
Please take the first test on the day they receive the home test. If the test is negative, your child can continue to attend school.
Please take the second test on the fifth day after exposure.
Your child may continue to attend school as long as your child receives negative test results both times and does not experience any symptoms of COVID-19.
If your child has COVID-like symptoms or feels ill, please have your child isolate and take the 2nd home test.
If your child tests positive on either home test, you must notify your child’s school and your child must isolate for 10 days.
If your child is in 3-K or Pre-K, your child must quarantine for 10 days since their last exposure 1/3/2022. Children who shared space with the individual who tested positive may test out of quarantine in order to return to their classrooms on the eighth day of quarantine. In order to do so, children should take a COVID-19 test on their fifth day of quarantine in order to re-enter class on the eighth day.
How do we stay healthy?
Vaccination is the most important tool we have to protect ourselves from COVID-19. All New Yorkers age 5 or older are eligible to be vaccinated for COVID-19. People who are between 5 and 17 years old are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine only; all older ages are eligible for all three vaccines. We encourage all eligible students to get vaccinated. Find a vaccine site today at https://vaccinefinder.nyc.gov/.There is no cost to be vaccinated.
Please remember to follow these important actions to prevent COVID-19 transmission:
Stay home if sick (except to get essential medical care, including COVID-19 testing).
Wear a face covering to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Practice healthy hand hygiene: Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer; avoid touching your face; and cover your cough or sneeze with your arm, not your hands.
How can I stay updated?
We will continue to closely follow directions from public health experts and proactively update you on any measures we are taking. To ensure we can reach you via text and email, please create a New York City Schools Account (NYCSA) as soon as possible by visiting schools.nyc.gov/nycsa.
To help New Yorkers quarantine, the NYC Test + Trace Corps partners with community-based organizations to connect individuals to resources like food, medicine, and health care. To connect with resources, you can call 1-212-COVID19 (212-268-4319).

Confirmed Case of COVID-19: Close Contacts Quarantined

Subject: Confirmed Case of COVID-19: Close Contacts Quarantined
Dear The Locke School of Arts and Engineering at 20 WEST 112 STREET Community:
The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and the NYC Test + Trace Corps (T2) have determined that someone in our school has tested positive for COVID-19, and may have exposed others while at school.
Below you will find guidance on next steps that will help keep you, your child, and our school community healthy and safe. The information below reflects the expertise of DOHMH, T2, and the New York City Department of Education (DOE).
What Happens Now?
● The Situation Room will work with school leadership to determine “close contacts” and ensure they are notified of the need to quarantine for 10 days from their last contact with the person who tested positive. Students and staff who are fully vaccinated do not need to quarantine if they are close contacts to a positive case of COVID unless they have symptoms.
● Students and staff who are not fully vaccinated and are considered close contacts may test out of quarantine to return to their classrooms after the seventh day. In order to do so, students should take a COVID-19 test on or after their fifth day of quarantine to re-enter class after the seventh day. Students must submit proof of a negative test through the COVID-19 Vaccination Portal, or by submitting the result to the school on paper or electronically.
● T2 and DOHMH will complete their investigation to identify and notify any other close contacts in the building, who will also need to quarantine for 10 days.
● Anyone with a positive COVID-19 test will not return to the school until they are no longer infectious.
● All areas visited by the person with COVID-19 will be deep cleaned, disinfected, and reopened.
● If your child is feeling sick, keep them at home.
How do we stay healthy?
Please remember to follow these important “Core Four” actions to prevent COVID-19 transmission:
Stay home if sick (except to get essential medical care, including COVID-19 testing).
Practice social distancing: Stay at least 6 feet away from people who are not members of your household.
Wear a face covering to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Practice healthy hand hygiene: Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer; avoid touching your face; and cover your cough or sneeze with your arm, not your hands.
Get vaccinated
● All New Yorkers age 5 or older are eligible to be vaccinated for COVID-19. If someone is fully vaccinated, they do not have to miss school, sports or work if there is a case in their classroom. People who are between 5 and 17 years old are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine only; all older ages are eligible for all three vaccines. Find a vaccine site today at https://vaccinefinder.nyc.gov/. There is no cost to be vaccinated.

Andrea Woodhouse
Updates to Chancellor's Regulation A-660
Posted December 8, 2021The Office of Family and Community Empowerment (FACE), in partnership with the Chancellor's Parent Advisory Council (CPAC), has successfully amended Chancellor's Regulation A-660. We are proud of the work that our Parent Associations (PAs) and Parent Teachers Associations (PTAs) were able to conduct throughout the pandemic, and the new policy changes ensure that those successful practices endure. The updated version of Chancellor's Regulation of A-660 can be viewed here. Below is a summary of the most important changes:
Eligibility for membership in PAs/PTAs has been expanded to include parents of students attending a 3K or pre-K program offered by a school under the jurisdiction of the community school district.
PAs/PTAs and Presidents’ Council meetings may be conducted in-person, on a virtual remote platform (VRP), or in a hybrid format.
PAs/PTAs and Presidents’ Councils may make payments using paper checks, electronic checks directly debited from the checking account or, in exceptional circumstances, a debit card.
As a companion document, FACE has also issued a policy implementation memorandum that guides PAs/PTAs and Presidents’ Councils in operationalizing changes related to financial transactions. The memorandum can be viewed here. Below are the salient points:
PA/PTAs and Presidents’ Councils must adopt procedures to ensure that online and debit card transactions are properly authorized and documented.
They also must pay special attention to fraud-control mechanisms (see memo).
Debit card transactions require membership authorization of both the expenditure and the method of payment; and they must be recorded on the Debit Card Disbursement Form.
Debit card transactions in excess of $5,000 require notification to the principal and FACE (in the case of a PA/PTA) or the superintendent and FACE (in the case of a Presidents’ Council.
Person-to-person or instant payment systems such as Venmo and Zelle may be used to receive donations, provided they are linked only to the PA/PTA or Presidents’ Council DOE-issued email address. Under no circumstance should they be used for making payments.
FACE has begun offering trainings on the new regulation to Family Leadership & Support Coordinators (FLCs/FSCs). In Collaboration with the Chancellor’s Parent Advisory Council, we are excited invite PA/PTA Members and Presidents Council Members to trainings on December 14th, 15th and 16th (flyer here). Please share widely, and feel free to reach out to FACE@schools.nyc.gov if you have questions.

Subject: Confirmed Case of COVID-19 but NO exposure to School Community
Dear The Locke School of Arts and Engineering at 20 WEST 112 STREET Community:
Today we are writing to inform you that on 12/7/2021 5:12 PM, a member of our school community tested positive for COVID-19. Upon investigation, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and the NYC Test & Trace Corps (T2) have concluded that there has been NO EXPOSURE to the school community because the person was NOT at school while infectious.
Below you will find guidance that reflects the expertise of DOHMH, the New York City Department of Education (DOE) and T2.
How do we stay healthy?
All New Yorkers age 5 and older are eligible to be vaccinated for COVID-19.
Please remember to follow these “Core Four” actions to prevent COVID-19 transmission:
Stay home if sick (except to get essential medical care, including COVID-19 testing).
Practice social distancing: Stay at least 6 feet away from people who are not members of your household.
Wear a face covering to reduce the spread of COVID-19
Practice healthy hand hygiene: Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer; clean frequently touched surfaces regularly; avoid touching your face; and cover your cough or sneeze with your arm, not your hands.
To connect with these resources, you can call 1-212-COVID19 (212-268-4319).
For additional information on COVID-19, visit schools.nyc.gov/coronavirus or call 311. Thank you for your cooperation. Health and safety will always come first in New York City public schools, no matter what.
Sincerely,
Andrea Woodhouse

December Letter from Chancellor Porter
Posted December 1, 2021Big news from our Chancellor, Meisha Porter:
"Since March, I have had the honor of a lifetime to serve as Chancellor for the incredible schools, educators, communities, families and most importantly, your children who make up the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE). Today, I am sharing the bittersweet news that I will be stepping down from my role as Chancellor at the end of this calendar year...."

CHANCELLOR PORTER AND CITY COUNCIL ANNOUNCE HISTORIC $4 MILLION INVESTMENT IN LANGUAGE ACCESS FOR ALL
Posted December 1, 2021NEW YORK – Today, Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter and City Council announced the launch of “Language Access for All,” an historic $4 million investment in improving outreach, engagement and communication with multilingual families across New York City. Approximately 40 percent of New York City Department of Education families speak a language other than English at home, and this initiative will strengthen the NYCDOE’s ability to deliver resources to all families in a language that’s accessible for them.
This unprecedented investment stresses four critical areas of focus: citywide multi-lingual “know your rights” campaigns; expanding communications outlets and tools to reach more families; building language access capacity of school staff; and partnering with community-based organizations to provide multilingual family workshops and language support.
In addition to the language access investment by City Council, the NYCDOE is expanding its central Translation and Interpretation Unit and which will allow us to translate Individualized Education Program (IEP) to any family in their preferred language upon request. To request a translated IEP, families should contact their school, call 718-935-2013 or visit schools.nyc.gov/hello.
“One of the great things about our schools is their incredible breadth of diversity – so many of our families speak different languages at home and it’s essential that they have what they need to be active partners in their child’s education,” said Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter. “This historic investment will help us better support each and every one of our students while strengthening our work with families and communities across New York City.”
“Recognizing the devastating impact of the pandemic on New York's immigrant communities and on schools, the Council made language access and family engagement a priority in the Fiscal 2022 Adopted Budget with a $4 million investment in the DOE. The Department's four pronged approach to supporting families whose primary language is not English will ensure that multilingual students' needs are met, that school staff are equipped with the tools to support these students, and that families are engaged,” said Council Speaker Corey Johnson.
“By expanding multi-lingual services for students and their families, we are increasing access to educational opportunities and building stronger school communities. This funding will help break down barriers and help parents support their child’s education with the availability of additional translation services. The ongoing pandemic continues to reveal many of the preexisting challenges our school system has faced and language access is one of them. Particularly, critical information and resources must be disbursed promptly to families in order to meet the needs of our children. I am proud to partner with Chancellor Porter to fund this important and timely initiative," said NYC Council Education Chair Mark Treyger.
“The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the inequities that our immigrant families face each day in our city. This was evident when it came to immigrant parents connecting with their local schools in a remote learning era,” said Council Member Carlos Menchaca, Chair of the Committee on Immigration. “I am proud to have worked with my colleagues and DOE to allocate this much needed $4 million investment to promote language equity and ensure medical, digital, and academic information is disseminated in languages the school community understands. When it comes to the education of our children, immigrant parents and DOE must be on the same page and speaking the same language.”
“This historic investment by City Council in language access will help our schools build bridges of trust with immigrant and multilingual families, and ensure that all families have the tools they need to support their children’s education,” said Deputy Chancellor of Community Empowerment, Partnerships, and Communications, Adrienne Austin. “We know that the road to language justice in public education is long, and we are taking a major step in the right direction.”
"With almost 40% of our DOE families speaking a language other than English at home and a growing list of avenues to communicate and engage families, we are grateful for the investment in the DOE’s language access efforts and look forward to enhancing our strategies to continue to empower our multilingual families," said Director of Translation and Interpretation Kleber Palma.
“Immigrant families, like all families in the NYC public schools, have a right to participate in their children’s education, but to do so, they have to feel comfortable communicating with their schools,” said Kim Sweet, Executive Director of Advocates for Children of New York. “The NYC Department of Education should ensure that immigrant families receive all school-related documents in their home language and in a form that is accessible to them, even if they have low literacy. The DOE should also provide immigrant families with high-quality interpretation at all meetings, events, and interactions with school staff. We are encouraged by the City’s $4 million investment in language access services and hope that these additional resources lead to the creation and funding of a permanent, effective system of immigrant family-facing communication going forward.”
“More than one in three New York City public school students has a parent who speaks a language other than English at home. For these parents, timely translations and interpretation are critical to be able to fully engage and make informed decisions in their children’s education. Yet many immigrant families only receive information about important policy changes - such as school closures and availability of devices - weeks after English-speaking parents or from a community-based organization. During the pandemic, the long-standing limitations in providing adequate resources in parents’ native languages were exacerbated, which compounded the disproportionate hardships immigrant students already endured and only widened the gaps in their educational outcomes,” said Andrea Ortiz, Senior Manager of Education Policy at the New York Immigration Coalition. “We commend the City Council and the DOE for this investment to begin implementation of the NYIC Education Collaborative’s Communications Plan to address the needs of immigrant parents. This is an important first step to address these issues and partner with community-based organizations that have a long history in supporting our immigrant communities.”
"Compared to the citywide rate at 25%, nearly half of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) New Yorkers of working age are limited English proficient (LEP), and LEP rates of specific languages, including Chinese at 63% and Korean at 52%, are higher. Additionally, 42% of AAPI New Yorkers are linguistically isolated, the highest rate across all groups, meaning that no one over the age of 14 in the household speaks English well or at all. Thus, prompt in-language outreach and communications are essential for AAPI families to be truly included into their children's school communities and to lower the barriers they face in accessing resources,” said Kaveri Sengupta, Education Policy Coordinator at the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families (CACF). “CACF applauds the City Council and the Department of Education for investing much-needed funding toward authentic family engagement and by extension, the capacity for students to reach their fullest potential, by building partnerships with community-based organizations directly serving families who speak languages other than English.”
A Letter from Principal Spence on Chancellor Porter's Visit to the Locke School
Posted November 30, 2021Dear Families,
It is my pleasure to share with you the incredible honor we had yesterday to have Chancellor Meisha Porter visit The Locke School of Arts and Engineering! It brought a burst of energy to our entire learning community to have her here.
Before Chancellor Porter visited classrooms, we had an opportunity to discuss some of the work that has been happening in our building. She was delighted to hear and couldn't wait to visit the classrooms where she met our students and staff. Throughout the classrooms she visited, all students were engaged in tasks that put them in positions to share their learning successfully. Dr. Porter was impressed with the confidence our children exhibited as they shared information with her. This is a testament to the work of our teachers, as they continually work hard to build relationships with their students creating a safe environment where students aren't afraid to speak up and take risks as they share.
Our Chancellor also had an opportunity to dance with Ms. Smith's fifth grade class during NDI, sing with Ms. Aiken and the students from Ms. Slipsager's class, and play pretend with our 3K students in Ms. Jackie's class. Overall, Monday was marvelous from start to finish. My only wish was that the Chancellor could have visited everyone, unfortunately, because of her schedule, this was not possible.
In conclusion, all of the Chancellor's interactions with our students and staff reflected overall warmth. The rooms and hallways reflected the dedication our staff have for their work and our students. Thanks for all you do, day in and day out to make this a part of who we are at The Locke School, a warm, welcoming and dedicated community.
Yours Truly,
Andrea Woodhouse-Spence

help secure Reduced class sizes for your child
Posted November 22, 2021Parents and stakeholders in NYC public education: the SLT is asking for your help. Research shows that our children learn best in smaller class sizes. Please sign the petition below or write an email to Speaker Johnson to help keep the class sizes low in NYC public schools. As of this posting, we have nearly 25,000 signatures, but we still need yours!
Two different ways you can help:
Sign the petition:

Write an email to speaker Johnson:
To: SpeakerJohnson@council.nyc.gov
An example letter is shown here:
Dear Speaker Johnson,
Thank you for signing on in support of the bill that would reduce class sizes in New York City (City Council Intro 2374-2021). As a Parent in a New York City public school, I’m grateful for your support. I urge you to schedule a vote on this important legislation so New York City students and educators can look forward to the future they deserve.
We want the same opportunities for our students that children in other parts of the state already enjoy when classes are small: closer connections with their peers and teachers, more individualized instruction and more chances to shine.
At a time when our children’s lives have been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, we can’t wait any longer to pass legislation that would make our classrooms safe and make a significant difference in students’ educational experience in the years ahead.
Please bring the City Council bill to a vote.
Sincerely,

Posted November 9, 2021PREKINDERGARTEN VISION SCREENING PROGRAM
Posted November 9, 2021PREKINDERGARTEN VISION SCREENING
Vision screening is an essential component of Pre-kindergarten programs. Our goal is early detection and better treatment outcomes for children who may have serious eye conditions, including amblyopia. Age four is the ideal time for treatment. Since the Chancellor’s Regulations require vision screening for Pre-K children, parental consent is not needed.
Vision screeners will use the SPOT device, an instrument designed for young children who may not know how to read. No drops will be used, and nothing will touch the child’s eyes. The SPOT device is child-friendly and fast, and it provides immediate results. After the screening, we will prepare letters to the parents of children who fail, advising them to take their children to an eye doctor.
FOLLOW-UP WITH PARENTS
After the screening is completed in a school, the Follow-up Unit calls the parents or guardians of all children who are at risks for amblyopia, and/or have poor vision.
For more information on Prekindergarten Vision Screening, please call:
Ulanda Thompson, Director of Pre-K Vision Screening, (917) 304-9781

Confirmed Case of COVID-19: Close Contacts Quarantined
Posted November 4, 2021We wanted to let you know that a member of our school community has tested positive for Covid-19. All close contacts have been contacted and are quarantining. Below is the full letter from Principal Spence.
---
11/4/2021
Subject: Confirmed Case of COVID-19: Close Contacts Quarantine.
Dear The Locke School of Arts and Engineering at 20 WEST 112 STREET Community: The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and the NYC Test + Trace Corps (T2) have determined that a member of our school community has tested positive for COVID-19 and may have exposed others while at school.
Below you will find guidance on next steps that will help keep you, your child, and our school community healthy and safe. The information below reflects the expertise of DOHMH, T2, and the New York City Department of Education (DOE).
What Happens Now?
The Situation Room will work with school leadership to determine “close contacts” and ensure they are notified of the need to quarantine for 10 days from their last contact with the person who tested positive. Students and staff who are quarantining will transition to fully remote teaching and learning for this period. T2 and DOHMH will complete their investigation to identify and notify any other close contacts in the building, who will also need to quarantine for 10 days.
Any staff or students who are fully vaccinated OR were recently (within the past three months) diagnosed with COVID-19 and finished isolation in the past 90 days will NOT need to quarantine as long as they have no COVID-19 symptoms. People who are fully vaccinated have received both shots of a two shot regimen or one shot of a single shot regimen and 14 days or more have elapsed since their last shot.
Unvaccinated students and staff who are considered close contacts may test out of quarantine in order to return to their classrooms after the seventh day. In order to do so, students should take a COVID-19 test on their fifth day of quarantine in order to re-enter class after the seventh day. Students must submit proof of a negative test through the DOE’s COVID-19 Vaccination Portal.
Anyone with a positive COVID-19 test will not return to the school until they are no longer infectious.
All areas visited by the person with COVID-19 will be deep cleaned, disinfected, and reopened.
If your child is feeling sick, keep them at home.
How do we stay healthy?
All New Yorkers age 12 or older are eligible to be vaccinated for COVID-19. If someone is fully vaccinated, they do not have to miss school, sports or work if there is a case in their classroom. People who are between 12 and 17 years old are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine only; all older ages are eligible for all three vaccines. Find a vaccine site today at https://vaccinefinder.nyc.gov/. There is no cost to be vaccinated.
Please remember to follow these important “Core Four” actions to prevent COVID-19 transmission:

Confirmed Case of COVID-19: Close Contacts Quarantined
Posted October 5, 202110/3/2021
Stay home if sick (except to get essential medical care, including COVID-19 testing).
Practice social distancing: Stay at least 6 feet away from people who are not members of your household. Wear a face covering to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Practice healthy hand hygiene: Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer; avoid touching your face; and cover your cough or sneeze with your arm, not your hands.

We will continue to closely follow directions from public health experts and proactively update you on any measures we are taking. To ensure we can reach you via text and email, please create a New York City Schools Account (NYCSA) as soon as possible by visiting schools.nyc.gov/nycsa.
