PS 185 is committed to exploring and implementing the principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). Through inquiry-based learning, student agency, and a focus on developing the whole child, we strive to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.
The PYP framework encourages students to become caring, reflective, and open-minded individuals who are prepared to thrive in an ever-changing world. As we continue our IB journey, we are dedicated to creating meaningful learning experiences that promote international-mindedness and academic excellence.

Each grade level designs a program of inquiry that aligns with the six International Baccalaureate transdisciplinary themes:
Who We Are
How We Express Ourselves
Where We Are in Place and Time
Sharing the Planet
How the World Works
How We Organize Ourselves
Students engage in these concept-based units of study, integrating reading, writing, social studies, and science standards appropriate for each grade. They participate in transdisciplinary learning that encourages them to take action within the school, at home, in the community, and globally.
At the Locke School, we believe that assessment is an essential and ongoing process that supports the learning and development of the whole child. Grounded in the principles of the IB Primary Years Programme, assessment is used to inform instruction, guide student learning, and support thoughtful decision-making. Teachers use assessment data to understand each child’s strengths, needs, and growth over time, allowing instruction to be responsive, differentiated, and meaningful. Assessments empower students by helping them reflect on their learning and take ownership of their progress, while also informing curriculum planning and the allocation of resources. In alignment with IB PYP practices, the Locke School uses a variety of tools—including rubrics, checklists, observations, and narrative feedback—to capture a holistic picture of student learning. Regular reporting through report cards, progress reports, and other assessments ensures clear communication with families and fosters a strong partnership between home and school in support of every child’s learning journey.
